A Brief Encounter in Carnforth

This romantic little town will capture your heart. Found at the northern end of Morecambe Bay, it's best known for its railway station, which played a prominent role in the classic 1940s film Brief Encounter starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson. You can relive the film in the visitor centre at the station, have your photo taken under the famous clock that featured so memorably in the movie and enjoy afternoon tea in the Refreshment Room.

Take in the grandeur of Leighton Hall

Just outside the town is this sprawling gothic mansion, the ancestral home of the furniture-making Gillow family. After touring the beautiful house and gardens, you can watch free birds of prey displays and treat yourself to a homemade scone in the tearooms. Throughout the year, the hall also plays host to car rallies, concerts and outdoor theatre productions.

Enjoy outdoor pursuits

If you want to get back to nature, be sure to visit Warton Crag which overlooks Carnforth. It's great for hiking, climbing and abseiling. Also Nearby is Leighton Moss RSPB Nature Reserve, where the BBC's 2014 series of Autumnwatch was filmed. Further afield, you can take in the breath-taking natural beauty of the Lake District, now a Unesco World Heritage Site. Planning a trip to Carnforth?
