A blast from the past at Bolton Castle

Built in the 14th century, Bolton Castle nestles in Wensleydale, close to Leyburn in North Yorkshire. Although damaged in the English Civil War, much of it remains intact. Perhaps more amazingly, it has never been sold and is still owned by the ancestors of its original residents, the Scrope family. It's been a location for such films and TV series as All Creatures Great and Small, Heartbeat and Elizabeth, but of most interest to historians is the fact that Mary Queen of Scots once spent six months living here.

A bird's eye view of Bolton Castle

Visiting Bolton Castle itself is fascinating thanks to its rich history, but it can be enhanced by a half-day falconry experience or 'hawk walk' in the grounds, during which attendees can learn more about these extraordinary birds of prey - and the brave can even find out what it's like to have one fly to and from their hand.

Follow in a Queen's footsteps at Bolton Castle

Overlooking the ancient Forest of Wensleydale, the gardens - a favourite of Mary Queen of Scots - are spectacular at all times of the year. The medieval gardens were restored in 1994, the herb garden, vineyard and maze contain a vast variety of flora and fauna, and the rose gardens and bowling green offer a riot of colour.
