Experience the great outdoors

Despite the name, the Yorkshire Dales National Park actually extends into Cumbria and Lancashire - the vast majority of its 840 square miles is in North Yorkshire, however. It comprises the rural area between Manchester, Leeds, Harrogate, Kendal and Darlington, and, thanks to its rugged rural beauty, attracts in excess of 8 million visitors every year. Due to its size, though, this number seems surprising - it's very easy to find areas where you're completely alone.

Take a hike

Many tourists come for the excellent walking routes which extend through the Dales. The Pennine Way, Dales Way, Coast To Coast Walk and the Pennine Bridleway all wind their way through the park. For the less hardcore hiker, each has several shorter segments which can easily be enjoyed in a few hours, before decamping to one of many local pubs thought the Dales for a hearty and well-earned lunch.

Discover outstanding beauty in Nidderdale

The southeastern portion of the Yorkshire Dales is not actually included within the national park's boundaries; it comprises the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding National Beauty. Here, nature lovers can find all manner of flora and fauna, from birds such as raptors and rare fowl to unusual flowers - and the scenery is stunning, making it ideal for photography.
