At home with the Clooneys...

Straddling the River Thames, this charming Berkshire village on the outskirts of Reading is one of the most idyllic places in the UK. So beautiful, in fact, that it has attracted the attentions of the A-list crowd. A certain George and Amal Clooney have already made their home here, on the island hamlet of Sonning Eye. So if you enjoy celeb-spotting, you might just be in luck here.

Get your fix of culture

The village even has its own theatre. The intimate Mill Theatre, set in a converted flour mill, serves up home-cooked meals in the adjoining restaurant before the drama unfolds on stage. Further afield, the free Reading Museum tells the story of the town from its Saxon beginnings through to its Huntley & Palmers biscuit tins to today's science and technology pioneers. You can also see a Victorian copy of the Bayeux Tapestry.

Enjoy a tipple at Stanlake Park Wine Estate

Wine buffs won't want to miss a trip to this fantastic vineyard that produces award-winning white, red and sparkling English wines. You can enjoy tastings as you wander round with the highly amusing tour guide. Treat yourself to a bottle of Stanlake Brut, the flagship wine of the estate, before you leave. Planning a trip to Sonning? Travelodge Winnersh Triangle Hotel is well placed, just minutes from the M4. Travelodge Reading Central Hotel is also close by, and ideal for trips into London.
