Whittlesey - a classic English market town

Located in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, six miles east of Peterborough, Whittlesey dates back to ancient times. It was originally an island surrounded by marshland, until the fens were drained. The town holds strong interests for archaeologists, and is believed to have once been famous for holding 52 pubs. A town steeped in tradition, these days it's known for the Whittlesey Summer Festival, featuring displays and stalls selling local goods.

Less than five miles from Whittlesey, Thorney Heritage Museum will be of interest to anyone fascinated in the history of Fenland areas. Like Whittlesey, Thorney was also once surrounded by water, and the museum documents this and more, mainly concentrating on the Saxon era onwards, when monks set up an isolated chapel.
