The land on which many of its small shops and Victorian terraces now stands was first recorded in 1400 as Finchley Common, the Bishop of London's hunting ground. It stands out for its wide range of housing styles, ranging from Victorian and Edwardian terraces to 60s council estates to the staggering mansions of the Bishop's Avenue.
