Nautical links in Rotherhithe

Situated on a peninsula on the south bank of the Thames in south-east London, Rotherhithe has a long history as a shipping port. Due to the strong links forged between Surrey Docks and the Baltic, Rotherhithe is home to a thriving Scandinavian community. There are Finnish and Norwegian churches on either side of Rotherhithe Library, alongside Scandinavian-owned cafes and shops.

Rotherhithe is also from where the Mayflower sailed to Southampton before its epic voyage to America. Raise a glass to the Pilgrim Fathers in the Mayflower Pub, one of the oldest inns on the Thames.

Take in the views at Stave Hill Ecological Park

Green spaces aren't that common around London's dockside, but Rotherhithe boasts an ecological park. This artificial mound offers a mix of woodlands and wetlands, and has some breath-taking views over the docks, particularly Canary Wharf.

Southwark Park is also close by. It offers fantastic open spaces, perfect for picnics, playing games, walking or just enjoying the scenery. It's also got a range of sporting facilities, art gallery, bandstand and boating lake.

Learn about feats of engineering at Brunel Museum

This excellent museum tells the story of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first and last projects - the Thames Tunnel and Great Eastern steamship. Watercolours, engravings and models explain these epic feats of engineering, and show how the constructors worked in the dark, evading flames and raw sewage every day.
