Centuries of history at Framlingham

Overseen by the towering Framlingham Castle, it's easy to see why the delightful Suffolk town of Framlingham was voted Britain's best place to live by Country Life. Around half an hour from the east coast, the town where Ed Sheeran grew up - immortalised in his single Castle on the Hill - is packed with charm and history. The imposing castle benefited from a 1.2million investment in 2017 with a new cafe and exhibition space. Breathe in the history, check out the interesting Lanman Museum, and stroll round the beautiful mere afterwards. Head into the town for lovely independent shops and cafes, and you can take the audio guided trail for more on its own interesting history.

Exploring Suffolk

A few minutes' drive away, Shawsgate Vineyard and shop is open to visitors. Animal lovers will enjoy the creatures at Easton Farm Park, and the Suffolk Owl Centre is also well worth a visit with a woodland walk plus kids' activities, along with the chance to see the centre's collection of owls, meerkats and red squirrels. During the warmer months, the gardens at Helmingham Hall are lovely to look round.

Head for the coast

The delightful Suffolk coast is around half an hour's drive - visit Orford for oysters and smoked fish, enjoy fish and chips on the seafront in Aldeburgh, wander round peaceful Walberswick before finding yourself in the gorgeous town of Southwold with its sandy beach.
