Walking holidays in rural Chapel-en-le-Frith

Lying on the edge of the Peak District, this charming Derbyshire town is the historic capital of the national park.

A host of scenic walking trails around the Peaks are easily accessible from the town, whose name derives from the French for 'chapel in the forest clearing'. In Chapel itself, a popular self-guided walking tour of the historic Old Town takes in the 13th-century Church of St Thomas Becket where 1,500 Scottish soldiers were imprisoned during the English Civil War, and the cobbled market square with its old stocks and an ancient cross.

Go wild at The Chestnut Centre

Animal lovers won't want to miss this hidden gem on the fringes of the town, set in stunning landscaped grounds. The wildlife park features Europe's largest collection of otters and owls, and is home to a giant otter, an endangered species native to South America.

Other animals to look out for include fallow deer, red foxes, harvest mice, polecats, pine martens and Scottish wildcats. The woodland trails are also home to a variety of wild birds.

Climb up Eccles Pike

Keen hikers might enjoy a trek up this isolated hill, just over a mile-long walk from Chapel's town centre. On a clear day you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Peak District and even as far as Manchester. Its unique sculptured landscape enables you to see all the dramatic Dark Peak summits.
