Most women in the UK would rather have a good night’s sleep than a steamy session in the bedroom, according to research commissioned by Travelodge, the UK’s only low cost hotel chain.

To celebrate National Bed Month, Travelodge today reveals the results of a sleep survey of 1060 UK adults*. Results show that an incredible 77% of women would willingly give up a night of passion if it meant getting a decent night’s sleep. It would seem guys on the other hand are always up for a bit of action between the sheets — not even a lack of sleep is enough to put them off with just over half saying they’d swap snoozing for nookie.

So if we’re all so knackered that we’re prepared to forego sex, just how many hours sleep do we need to feel fully rested? According to the survey, 55% of us need a full 9 hours sleep, with men feeling they need less sleep than women - 30% claim to need only 6 hours, compared with only 23% of women. Unsurprisingly, the laziest bunch are those students – 1 in five 16 -24 year olds are convinced they need 15 hours sleep a night!

It seems women are right to recognise the importance of sleep, as nine out of 10 of those surveyed have done something totally out of character, dangerous or just downright stupid due to sleep deprivation:
Beware the wrath of the tired woman - 72% admit losing their temper when sleep deprived, compared with a more chilled 67% of men. Want him to spend Sunday at your parents’? Ask him while he’s exhausted, as men succumb to pressure more easily when tired, with 35% agreeing to do something they otherwise would never have done! (Compared with 26% of women).
When it comes to oversleeping, those lazy students still don’t wake after 15 hours - 37% of 16-24 year olds have missed an important event through ignoring the alarm! This compares with just 11% of those aged 55+.
Snoring coming from the other end of your train carriage? Men are more likely to fall asleep in public with 1 in 5 having fallen asleep on the train and missed their stop compared with just 13% of women.
Perhaps the most disturbing figure is those who have fallen asleep whilst driving. Men are the worst offenders, with 15% admitting to having fallen asleep at the wheel. 8% of women have also nodded off in this most dangerous place.
Simon Gregory, sales and marketing director for Travelodge, said: “At Travelodge it’s our business to make sleep a priority and we conducted this research to highlight the importance of a good night’s sleep and the positive impact this has on other areas of our life.
