The 16ft x 10ft postcard provides the perfect backdrop for customers to capture what makes Liverpool so great, in just one image - as a keepsake of their trip

The instragrammable postcard was unveiled at the official opening of Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge

To mark the official opening of Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge, the company’s 581st hotel, Travelodge has created the UK’s first instragrammable postcard showcasing what makes Liverpool so great’ as voted by the nation.

To create the 16ft (height) x 10ft (wide) Instagrammable postcard wall, Travelodge surveyed 2,000 British adults to seek their views on what makes Liverpool so great in regards to its most iconic figures, landmarks and the city’s greatest assets.

Travelodge commissioned artist, Luke McDonnell, to take inspiration from these key findings and create a bespoke Instagrammable postcard wall. With the aim to provide the perfect backdrop for customers to capture the essence of what makes Liverpool so great, in just one image - as a keepsake of their trip.

With hundreds of reasons of what makes Liverpool so great, the Instagrammable postcard wall incorporated the nation’s top five most iconic figures and their top three favourite landmarks and assets.

Liverpool is a world famous city oozing the ‘Great’ factor in terms of culture, style, sport, history, music, humour and the arts. The 812 year old cosmopolitan city holds the Guinness Book of Records title for being the Capital of Pop with Liverpudlian legends, The Beatles, changing the face of popular music. It’s the UK’s most successful footballing city and boosts the largest collection of Grade II-listed buildings outside London. Taking this into account it was no easy task for Britons to vote for what they believe makes Liverpool so great.

Britons voted the most popular and influential group in the history of pop music, The Beatles as their overall favourite iconic figures. The much loved singer, TV presenter, actress and author who dedicated over 50 years to show business, Cilla Black OBE came in second place.

Making the top three ranking is football legend, Steven Gerrard MBE who spent the majority of his career playing for his home football ground, Liverpool FC and also as club captain for the England national team.

Fourth place was awarded to national hero, Bill Shankly OBE) who brought world-renowned success to Liverpool FC, gaining promotion to the First Division and winning three League Championships and the UEFA.

Taking fifth position, in Liverpool’s top five most iconic figures was one of Britain’s top comedian’s from Knotty Ash, Sir Ken Dodd

In the Liverpool landmark rankings, Britons, overall winner was the world’s most famous water skyline which is home to The Royal Liver Building, built in 1911; it’s one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city of Liverpool and is home to two fabled Liver Birds that watch over the city and the sea.

Britons second favourite landmark is the famous Liverpool ferry that crosses the River Mersey seven times during the day.

Completing the top three rankings of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks is the city’s most famous street, Penny Lane. It was made famous by the Beatles song of that name. John Lennon and Paul McCartney used to meet at Penny Lane to catch a bus into town. Their shared childhood experiences on the street inspired them to write the son.

On the assets front, Britons voted for the city’s two football clubs, Liverpool FC and Everton. In third place was Liverpool’s 2008 Capital of Culture Award win. The city won the bid based on its architecture, the northern city has more listed buildings than anywhere outside of London, its art, music, sport, humour and on its people.

Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge Spokesperson said: “To celebrate the opening of Liverpool Edge Lane Travelodge, our 581st hotel, we are very excited to have created an instragrammable postcard, paying homage to the city’s greatest assets.  It’s the perfect backdrop to capture the essence of what makes Liverpool so great in just one image.
